{"id":109994,"date":"2019-08-10T16:33:50","date_gmt":"2019-08-10T21:33:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.synthtopia.com\/?p=109994"},"modified":"2019-08-10T16:33:50","modified_gmt":"2019-08-10T21:33:50","slug":"shredding-with-the-push-tar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.synthtopia.com\/content\/2019\/08\/10\/shredding-with-the-push-tar\/","title":{"rendered":"Shredding With &#8216;The Push-tar&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dan Freeman - Prelude 4 (Live): PERFORMANCE ONLY\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3uD__td6lE8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>At the recent <strong>Ableton Spaces<\/strong> event, held July 13th 2019 in Brooklyn, NY, we met <strong>Dan Freeman<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bkdigicon.com\/faculty\/dan-freeman\/\">Director of the Brooklyn Digital Conservatory<\/a>, who let us know about his unique approach to performing with the <strong>Push<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As seen in the video embedded above, Freeman performs with a custom Push rig, <strong>Blinky<\/strong>, aka the &#8216;Push-tar&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danfreeman.com\/prelude-4-live-performance-video-a-different-approach-to-electronic-music-performance\/\">what he has to say about it<\/a>:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">&#8220;A year ago, I had the pleasure of working with the great jazz pianist Rachel Z in my studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn. I showed her my live set-up and complained to that, as a bass player, I really didn\u2019t like to perform electronic music while standing up behind a table. She suggested that I should take the Ableton Push and mount it on my body and play it like a bass. We chatted about it and I realized it could be a really cool idea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Soon afterwards, I spent several weeks in Costa Rica and Colombia on a tour and in my spare time, I drew pictures of this Push-guitar. By the time, I got back to New York, I knew exactly how I would put it together. First, I pulled a bass into pieces. Then, I went to Home Depot and bought $18 or supplies \u2013 some clamps and some velcro and \u201cBlinky\u201d was born.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Blinky consists of an <strong>Ableton Push 2<\/strong>, a <strong>Korg nanoKONTROL 2<\/strong>, a <strong>Numark Orbit<\/strong> controller and a <strong>Keith McMillen Instruments 12 Step<\/strong> MIDI Foot Control.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">I use the Ableton Push 2 for making the music \u2013 playing it like a keyboard. The nanoKONTROL 2 is used for effects \u2013 filters and such, mutes, changing sounds and recording loops.
