Korg microKorg Vintage Synth Review

This video, via The Unperson, offers a vintage synth review of the Korg microKorg – originally release way back in 2002.

The microKorg was viewed as a toy by many, when it was introduced, but it packs a tremendous range of capabilities into its compact package. And, even today, it’s a capable virtual analog – which accounts for its 20+ years on the market.

Video Summary:

“I explore the sound engine, presets, vocoder, arpeggiator, and hands-on controls, and put it through its paces in a modern setup to see whether the MicroKorg still deserves its iconic status — or whether nostalgia is doing the heavy lifting.

If you’ve ever wondered why this little synth refuses to disappear, this video should answer that question.

I have to admit that I was really blown away with the depth and quality of the MicroKorg. I think it’s absolutely amazing! “

    1. Boo boo. Manufacturers tend to make things that people buy, and not the other way around. What is being offered today is what we demanded; because we want things to be affordable so we can keep buying. That’s how this industry makes money, and as such the users are to blame. Rooms full of unused junk. With new gear promising to make our music better.

    1. I had this beast before I bought the mighty Microkorg X.L. fantastic synth. I just wish it had tje USB C.on it. I’m really into Hard Rave, Industrial/ Technology Music. It was perfect for it.

  1. One way to describe the MicroKorg is as a “Vintage Synthesizer” but another way would be to call it “The best selling synthesizer in the world.” Because it has been sold for so many years, the sales numbers have outpaced the Korg M1, the Yamaha DX7, and other popular synthesizers.

  2. It – like the MS2000 and 2000B which share most of its engine – are damned good VAs. Yeah the action is awful and it’s 4 notes but they still sound good today. If you’re able to find the S version with the expanded memory and built in speakers, get it.

  3. Microkorg and Blofeld were my first hardware synths. Realizing that they are considered „vintage“ now hits different.
