This video, via abominable music, offers a preview of OB-Xf, an open source project from the Surge team, aiming to recreate the sound of the classic Oberheim OB-X.
OB-Xf is currently available as a standalone application on macOS, Windows, and Linux (VST3, AU, LV2, CLAP formats).
To install on your system, download the appropriate installer (dmg, exe, deb) and run it.
Very tidy synth. Some of the sourishness seemed a bit overstressed here and there. I suppose that is adjustable. Shouldn’t try too hard to sound actually analog. That’s an affectation, after all, and not a real component of the sound. If Tom Oberheim and all the other analog inventors could have completely eliminated off tuning from the get go I am sure they would have without a moment’s regret. But it became an institution and now every attempt at analog has to sound analog even if it sounds bad. That’s foolish. Throw out the bathwater, keep the baby.
It was a love from the first sight, and they even included 16 of my presets in the library. Can’t wait till mpe support, these guys rock!
Save the baby *and* the bathwater. Make soup!
Mmmm soup.
Is it me or does the demo video have reverb all over it?
Sounds great, starting to build a collection of free plugins that rivals my paid ones
I don’t fault anyone for their particular likes, but I think we’re reaching Moog and Oberheim saturation. If you’ve ever had a chance to noodle at a classic Obie, especially the 4/8-Voice or OB polys, one of the current versions should nail it. I’ve had a mass of Korgs and the same thing applies. I don’t sweat the small differences only a dolphin could hear. 😛 I’m perfectly happy to have only 90% of the original.
So – does this make the OB-X obsolete or … ?
