Ave Maria On The Qweremin C64 Chiptune Theremin

Developer & synthesist Linus Ã…kesson shared his arrangement of Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod) for the Qweremin.

The Qweremin is described as a ‘QWERTY theremin’. It’s played by using the right hand on the keyboard to play individual notes, and the left hand to control volume and vibratro.

Here’s his intro to the Qweremin:

  1. I love that this guy is doing his own thing. The Qweremin is a pretty cool instrument, and it’s clear that he had to solve some interesting engineering problems to make it possible.

There’s a risk with this type of thing of getting into D-Beam territory, where the performer looks like they’re just waving their hand around for no reason – which kind of looks stupid. The fact that this has an antenna makes a difference – it makes it so you can immediately see how his hand motion is affecting the sound.
