In the latest episode of Now You Know, host Mark Strange takes an in-depth look at the Mellotron Micro Module – the latest iteration of the modern digital Mellotron.
The Mellotron Micro Module is essentially a keyboardless version of the Mellotron Micro. Differences are:
- The “Octave” switch for the keyboard on the Micro is a High/Low switch on the Micro Module. The High/Low switch can be set to lower the playback speed of the samples by one or two octaves.
- The Midi jacks are 3.5 mm, not 5 pin DIN. Note: The “B” standard is used for the 3.5 mm jacks.
- It can handle both Midi mono aftertouch and polyphonic aftertouch.
- There is no Midi out.
- It can NOT be expanded with CF expansion cards, it is based on Micro SD storage.

Makes a superior stocking stuffer. I’m in the camp that prefers 37 keys, but its easy to see the appeal. It has all the library most mortals will ever need. The 3.5 mm MIDI ports are concerning if you travel, but if it stays in the studio, no sweat. I prefer GForce’s M-Tron Pro, because it has the range of a synth now and a honking big add-on library that shows it off. Pick your favorite flavor.
I’d love something like this, but I wish it had 5 pin DIN MIDI jacks. I’m getting really tired of the trend to put everything on mini jacks.
I agree. If it has MIDI, it has MIDI. Does it really help a company to choose the cheapest jacks? How much more does the DIN version really cost, anyway? It feels like a weak point that can eventually hurt the instrument in normal use.
I digress, but I have two pet peeves:
1. I can live just fine with 3.5mm MIDI ports. But for heaven’s sake manufacturers, agree on *either* A or B.
2. Why can’t USB C be the standard power plug? How many more different PSU bricks do we need?
Fad but pointless.
I love this thing. I don’t care about the issues with jacks and sockets! I’m just grateful for the product. Thanks for producing an affordable way of getting these wonderful samples.
Not sure I agree on the affordability.. Lovely samples though they are, (to me) the price feels like a violation
