On its own this instrument isas annoying to my ears as all the other grating 50s 60s experimental nonsense.

There’s been a long tradition of women playing the theremin, starting all the way back with Clara Rockmore, who worked with Theremin himself. And many of the best players are women.

In the ’50s and ’60s, though, Dr. Samuel Hoffman pretty much single-handedly established the ‘spooky’ association of the theremin, performing with it on dozens of film soundtracks.

And there’s ‘s no lack of world-class theremin players today that are men. Here’s just a few:

Peter Pringle:

Grégoire Blanc:

Massimo Cervini:

Rob Schwimmer:

Randy George:

While there are definitely instruments with strong gender associations (see harp and trumpet), theremin isn’t one of them!

No, I never noticed that. I don’t think there’s a correlation between musical talent and gender. Might just be your personal preference.
