New Music From Boards Of Canada – ‘Tape 05’

Scottish electronic duo Boards Of Canada shared this music video, teasing their first new music in more than a decade, Tape 05.

Tape 05 carries on the classic warbly, analog Boards of Canada sound, but also seems more cinematic than their previously releases. It has a programmatic arc that starts with an eerie lo-fi soundscape. builds to climax a couple of minutes in, and then fades into lo-fi artifacts.

The group has not made any announcement regarding the track, so it’s not clear if it’s a teaser for a new album or something else.

Check out Tape 05 and share your thoughts in the comments.

      1. I love BOC since…well since they started.
I would however as much as i love them not think of the word Innovative
when listening to the new release tbh.
Why does someone need to „compete“ with a creator in order to have an opinion.
Thats like saying no listener has the right to have an opinion unless they best their
        favorite band in a way

    1. Look, no one can deny “Reaper,” and “Burnin’ for You” was definitely a jam, but after that, they just kinda went downhill for me. I don’t know what the hell this video is, but it definitely would benefit from a tasty Buck Dharma solo and a whole lot more cowbell.

  1. Tomorrow’s Harvest was a bit of a disappoint for me, compared to their previous releaeses. Somehow I do belibeve this one is going to be on the level of Geogaddi at minimum.

    1. I was hoping too but in my case i realised that it sounds too familiar to their old stuff and that i am
24 years older than when i listened to Geogaddi. No way to objectively „compare“ as i am a different person now. Feels a bit like the Rolling Stones. Some people love them doing tours playing the same things forever and some others don`t. Even if they like the initial music.
Tbh i am more disappointed in myself not being able to enjoy it as deeply anymore than i am from them doing something so similar to all their old things

  2. BOC didn’t knock my socks off right away. I had to drink it all in for a while. I finally realized that in a sense, BOC is a lesson in Ambient 101. Its the flip side of a smoking rock solo. When this piece suddenly broadens mightily mid-way through, its like coming home.

    1. ‘Smoking rock solo’ – initially misread and thought you were referring to the reflective solitude enjoyed by crack enthusiasts. Probably not a thing.

    1. I think anyone commenting here is a fan of BOC one way or another i.e to some degree or else they would not bother reading or commenting.
Some will love anything new and others maybe not.
Claiming one has no taste because they don`t like what to some sounds like a recycled version of everything else they did in the past is a bit harsh imho
I agree with Techno in this case even though i can`t say i listen to Techno music

  3. I love BoC. And I’ll never be mad about having more to listen to. But MHTRTC is 28 years old and more vibey pads isn’t what I want from them. Their best work (to me) is their unique, unsettling balance of innocent and sinister … of hope, and despair. Of optimism and cynicism. I’m not really getting that from this. The second half of the new track feels more like the menu time-out music from Halo.

    1. People are jaded about Behringer, because the company hasn’t done anything in a log time, and can’t seem to ship much of what they announce.
