WoodPecker MIDI V2 Sequencer Now Available For iOS, Mac

Woodman’s Immaculate Maple Syrup Studio has released WoodPecker 1.0, a software step sequencer for MacOS and iOS.

WoodPecker has 4 sequencers, which can send to 4 different MIDI channels (and/or MIDI V2 groups). Each sequencer has up to 64 steps and 4 variations (resulting in max 256 steps)

The app can be used stand-alone or as a plugin in a DAW.

Here’s a quick demo of how it works, via Gavinski’s Tutorials:

Features:

  • Each sequencer can set its own number of steps and step duration.
  • Each sequencer has 4 Variations (which can have different values for all step params).
  • Variations can be selected manually or from any step.
  • Sequencers can be started manually, by DAW transport, by Midi RT Play, by keyboard note input and when inserted as audio effect by audio input triggering.
  • BPM can be set manually, by tapping, by the DAW or by the Midi RT clock.
  • WoodPecker can also send the Midi Clock and Midi RT play start/stop messages.
  • Midi V2 mode sends UMP messages given higher precision.
  • Resync mode restarts at step 1 after a number of bars (compensate for the random or odd timings).
  • Midi can be sent to the DAW and/or directly to the OS (allowing a plugin to address external instruments).
  • Stand-alone app support Midi over BlueTooth.
  • Each Step has:
    – “On” or “Skip” probability.
    – Velocity value.
    – Random note probability.
    – Random note range which can be limited to a scale.
    – Ratcheting (repetition of same note in the step).
    – 9 ratcheting patterns (triplet, 4-sixteenths, 2-eights, etc).
    – Ratcheting probability.
    – Delta step time setting (different duration : 0.5 … 2.0 times the BPM step time).
    – Can send 4 Midi (CC, PC, Pressure, Pitch, V2 RPN, …) or meta commands (start/stop other sequencer, set variation).
  • Presets can be stored in iCloud Drive (makes them available on all your devices).

Pricing and Availability:

WoodPecker is available now, with the following pricing:

  • Mac – $34.99
  • iOS – $11.99

  1. I believe that with the older app Quantum (and MIDI Sequencer, even older, from the same developer) you get much of the functionality of WoodPecker, and they continue playing when loading a preset. Both Quantum and MIDI Sequencer run on old iPads and new ones.

  2. the sequencers from this developer are great. the user interfaces can be a bit cryptic due to the cheer amount of functions.
I will buy this one for the advance of being Auv3. and that it is under active development.

To be able to swipe the stepfaders, not only up and down per step, but also in fluent movement from left to right, as in drawing a curve, seems essential to me.
Also i would like to see Program Change as sequenceable parameter target.
I did not install the app yet but i hope Nudging left right, variable note lengths, random and undo are supported.
And the option to choose a color for the interface to differentiate when using more then one instance..

thanks dev! 🙂 good to have you back in sequencerland! money is on its the way!

Can‘t wait to drive my DSI evolvers with this, layered with the Hilda synth app going into Transit 2 fx, or whatever 🙂

  3. what all these new sequences lack is Shifting left/right by milliseconds…per step not “nudge” whole pattern. This is lack leaving out Velocity

    1. I read the manual and it indeed does not seem to be able to do this. This is a dealbreaker for me, it makes everything dub rhythm-like impossible.
In Octachron step sequencer it is called step-offset. Luckily the sliders can be Ganged to move them al the same amount of milliseconds late.

I really hope this gets implemented.

  4. Synthhead: i had an engaged and positive comment here, allong with some constructive critisism as well. 2 or 3 days ago. Why is it never published? I never was censured here before. Are rules more strict for paying adverts?

    1. Was it the comment above? It sounds like it just got flagged for manual moderation over the weekend, so it took longer than normal to get reviewed.

We normally review comments flagged for moderation several times a day. But it can be longer over the weekend. We have lives and comments not only don’t pay the bills – they’re overhead.

FYI – there’s no ‘censuring’ on any Synthtopia comments, ever. You can post any criticism of any THING you like. People do it all the time and we encourage it. Keep it constructive and on topic.

We just don’t allow hate speech, personal attacks and spam. We don’t want to be liable for that stuff. We’ll ban people for being a-holes, but not for having constructive criticisms!

Also – none of Synthtopia’s posts are “paying adverts”, unlike lots of sites. Where’d you get that idea? We’ll tell you if anything is ‘sponsored’!

  5. okay thanks for the information Synthhead. It was just the first time my comment was hold for manual moderation, and another of my posts was not.
