In his latest Sonic Lab review, host Nick Batt shares an in-depth review of the new Dreadbox Artemis analog polyphonic synthesizer.
Batt says that there’s a lot to like.
“I immediately gelled with the Artemis, and found myself frequently lost in sound while I should have been getting on with the review,” he says, adding, “The sound is delightful, and if you like the Dreadbox sound, then this could be a natural progression.”
On the cons side, Batts nots that the Artemis’s price of £1077 puts in up against digital synths and mass-produced synths that offer more polyphony or features.

Personally I think we have reached way too many same all. same all analogue synths.
Sorry, but my ears these days are spoiled by plugins offering instant gratification and infinite sound possibilities that Dreadbox and others like it can not…
I agree with Leslie’s comments, we have done a 180 and killed all synth innovation by trying to go to “analog” for the past 10 years.
We need hardware synths that push the envelope of what can be done sonically. All this trying to recreate 70s Moog and CS80s sounds/vibes is getting boring, with some plugins doing a much better job at that for way less money.
You’re not wrong, but for live or DAWless this thing is probably the bee’s knees (haven’t seen the video yet). Also, processing power is limited, and VSTs still crash occasionally. Sound wise analogue synths still win for me, but given the convenience of plugins the small differences are hardly worth it to me, outside the situations I mentioned.
But…but can your plugins do the lovely sing song harmonics?
This synth has a depth of sound and a rich sense of character you just can’t find in a plug-in!
There are a whole heap of hardware synths available at this price point that don’t come close to the bottom end of the Artemis sound. I’m totally sold. I have any number of gorgeous sounding VST’s but this will compliment my sound with ease. A great piece of gear.
Thanks for an excellent review, as always ?
